The Awards Management Unit (AMU)

Established in January 2016, the Awards Management Unit (AMU) is a global unit with staff based in Germany, New York, London, Nairobi, and Amman. It has responsibility for identifying, securing and managing all funding from statutory/government donors. The unit is organized into five pillars: Donor Relations & Analytics; Grants Management and Frameworks; Compliance and Policy; Programme Development (Business Development); and Training.

The AMU is a bridge between donors and the field: providing expert technical advice to the field, while maintaining portfolio-level visibility to ensure consistency and compliance, and manage risk. This unit ensures that donor compliance policies and procedures are implemented consistently, and supports all staff working across the grants management cycle for all restricted funding from global government sources. The unit operates within a matrix management system across teams in Germany, the US and the UK, driving functional integration between all relevant units and staff, in collaboration with the Vice President, AMU, and the Senior Vice President for Europe in relation to overarching issues with European donors.

Purpose of the Role

AMU’s Training and Curriculum Development (T&CD) pillar was created to increase the capacity for the creation of training curricula and materials for IRC’s Awards Management Unit. The T&CD Pillar was created address the needs of IRC’s international and domestic field offices for dedicated training staff to increase the frequency and quality of training support around the world. 

Supporting the T&CD Pillar to deliver high-quality and dynamic learning opportunities accessible by colleagues around the globe, the Learning & Training Manager is responsible for the design and delivery of effective learning solutions to support the priorities of AMU and that of its internal clients relating business development and grants management-related learning. Specifically, the L&T Manager will be responsible for developing learning journey maps and standardized training curriculum for both face-to-face and online self-guided learning. 

Key Accountabilities and Major Responsibilities

Develop and manage learning maps for key work functions (20%)

  • Develop “learning journey maps” for the T&CD Pillar’s target learning audience which defines the path of a learner’s experience defined by the information, knowledge, people and resources needed to successfully attract and manage donor resources.
  • Develop detailed learning frameworks that include reviewing learning outcomes and mapping out course activities, assessments and resources;
  • Research, and creates content, learning activities, and assessments that are relevant and appropriate for each training program;
  • Track learner experiences through various stages of progression, from building awareness of learning needs, to consuming learning and applying it on the job.
  • Development of learning curricula, as assigned, by working with key subject matter experts (SME) for both face-to-face and online learning (20%)
  • Develop and disseminate timeline for production of priority training materials to support the on-boarding of incoming colleagues and development of existing colleagues.
  • Design online and blended courses, and select/apply the most appropriate instructional design approaches to produce highly relevant, engaging and interactive content.
  • Develop detailed session descriptions and learning plans that are based on proved adult-learning methodologies to be used IRC’s worldwide staff to ensure consistency

Serve as AMU’s SME for online learning (self-guided & facilitated) and lead the T&CD Pillar’s online learning portfolio which includes the administration of the Kaya Training Platform (20%)

  • Work closely with Human Resources utilize Kaya modalities to promote the T&CD Pillar’s training priorities, alignment to learner journey maps, and learner experience.
  • Coordinate with other AMU staff responsible for staff onboarding and knowledge transfer (i.e. OTIS).
  • Populate Kaya with learning and training opportunities and content.
  • Utilize Kaya to register training participants and conduct pre and post-learning. 

Facilitate peer-to-peer training to increase knowledge sharing and cross-training. (30%)

  • Responsible for delivering or co-delivering at least five workshops and eight webinars as detailed in the T&CD annual calendar based on standardized training curricula.
  • Develop and facilitate a “learning & training” community of practice composed of IRC staff with training responsibilities whom have been or will be training in training-of-trainers.
  • Support and mentor staff to effectively deliver T&CD standardized curriculum.

Develop and manage the T&CD Pillar’s learning calendar including communication of learning opportunities, learner registration, and quarterly/annual performance reports. (10%)

  • Draft, seek input and approval, and release annual AMU training calendar which will require working with other AMU pillars to capture collective AMU learning opportunities.
  • Develop and disseminate timeline for production of priority training materials to support the on-boarding of incoming colleagues and development of existing colleagues.
  • Develop quarterly reports to share with AMU Senior Management detailing P&CD Pillar achievements and performance metrics.
  • Contribute to the development of the T&CD annual report to be shared with IRC Leadership detailing AMU’s learning achievements and performance against performance metrics  

Key Relationships: All pillars within AMU, Human Resources, International Programs Department, US Programs, Policy and Practice, Finance

Requirements:

  • 5+ years progressive experience or proven background in training and development, and/or talent management in a global matrix organization; NGO knowledge preferred.
  • Strong learning & development expertise including needs analysis, consultation, innovative learning solutions and adult learning.
  • Instructional design experience in various modes and remote learning techniques such as virtual classroom, webcast, job aid tools, LMS, WebEx, AdobeConnect etc.
  • Strong interpersonal, relationship management and influence skills. · Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated experience managing, curating and delivering internal Learning and Development communication.
  • Experience creating training programs and instruction organically; homegrown solutions to solve key knowledge deficiencies or rolling out new concepts and/or initiatives.
  • Fluency in French desired, but not required.
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally at least 30% time.
