Job Overview: The Employment Specialist position is part of the Economic Empowerment department and is responsible for managing the provision of services to assist IRC clients to attain self-sufficiency through employment. The Employment Specialist guides clients through employment preparation, placement, and other career enhancing services. The Employment Specialist operates under close supervision of the Employment Programs Coordinator with moderate latitude for the use of independent judgment and initiative.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Provide intake, assessment, and pre-employment job readiness orientation to eligible clients.
- Develop comprehensive employment plans for each employable adult and monitor progress.
- Assist clients in creating a budget and provide strategies for budget improvements.
- Provide group and one-on-one job counseling that provides the clients with basic skills required to enhance their employability.
- Determine specific employment opportunities appropriate to clients and assist clients in accessing these opportunities by guiding them through the hiring process.
- Assist in facilitating workshops and open houses with clients and partner agencies.
- Assist clients and employers as necessary with both pre and post-placement issues and continuing employment needs.
- Monitor and track client job performance and wage levels to ensure client self-sufficiency.
- Ensure timely and accurate compliance to all reporting requirements, including database management, case noting, and file maintenance.
Interdepartmental and Team Collaboration:
- Participate in program meetings, staff development activities, and other duties as assigned.
- Work as part of a team to provide comprehensive strength-based services to IRC clients through coordination of cases and effective communication between team members and departments.
- Comply with all policies, procedures and protocols of the agency.
Key Working Relationships:
Position Reports to: Employment Programs Coordinator
Position directly supervises: May oversee and guide program interns and volunteers.

Internal: IRC Employees, interns, volunteers
External: Current and potential client employers
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field and prior working experience with immigrant populations.
- Minimum of 2 years of relevant work experience in human services field preferred.
- Knowledge of employee rights and HR practices strongly preferred.
- Prior experience with Matching Grant program employment services preferred.
- Demonstrated success working and communicating effectively in a multi-cultural environment.
- Proven ability to contribute both independently and as a key team member.
- Self- starter with excellent problem-solving skills combined with the proven ability to multi-task, prioritize duties, and manage time effectively.
- Fluency in English, both spoken and written required; bilingual ability in Arabic, French, Spanish, or Dari is desired.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook).
- A combination of standard office environment and ‘field’ time in and around the service delivery area to perform the above outlined responsibilities.
