BACKGROUND

IRC-UK

International Rescue Committee UK is part of the IRC global network, which has its headquarters in New York. Our European headquarters, IRC-UK, were established in London in 1997 to support the organisation’s global activities and particularly to diversify its donor base and be able to better advocate with European policy-makers on behalf of the people we serve. Since its establishment IRC-UK has grown rapidly and is now acknowledged for its high quality project management, technical expertise in governance and rights and economic recovery, and innovative thinking on early recovery and gender based violence. The IRC also has offices in Berlin, Brussels and Geneva.

IRC-UK comprises approximately 110 staff across five departments.

FUNDRAISING DEPARTMENT

The IRC has invested significantly in the UK fundraising team which has increased its capacity considerably over the past 3 years. There are ambitious plans to increase this even further as part of an exciting global revenue generation strategy in development. This is therefore an exciting time to join a fast-paced, dynamic team with ambitious but achievable targets.

This role sits in the Major Gifts team within the UK Private Fundraising Team. Currently comprising 8 members of staff, the Major Gifts team works alongside the Corporate Partnerships and Digital Fundraising teams, and is also supported by the Strategy & Planning team, including a researcher.

The postholder will join the Trusts & Foundations sub-team, currently comprising the Trusts & Foundations Manager and 1 existing Trusts & Foundations Executive. Trusts & Foundations is a key growth area for IRC-UK, with significant potential to grow revenue from existing supporters and a robust new business pipeline in place for financial year (FY) 2020. This role will be critical in enabling the sub-team to achieve this potential and surpass targets for FY2020 and beyond.

PURPOSE OF THE JOB

Reporting to the Trusts and Foundations Manager, the Trusts and Foundations Executive will:

  • Work with the other Trusts team members to maximise restricted and unrestricted income from existing and new donors within the Trusts & Foundations function
  • Identify, research and cultivate potential new supporters of the IRC’s work to meet ambitious new business development targets, focusing on mid- to high-level UK trusts
  • Deliver outstanding donor stewardship and grants management support to existing IRC-UK trust and foundation supporters.

 SCOPE AND AUTHORITY

Authority: Contribute to the delivery of the trusts and foundations annual fundraising target, with particular focus on new business.

Responsibility for Resources: None.

    • International field and technical staff within country and regional programmes and the US
    • Representatives of existing and potential trust & foundation supporters, including senior stakeholders (e.g. trust Board members)
    • Finance staff in the UK
    • Fundraising and communications colleagues in the UK, US and Europe

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

a)     Business development (60%)

  • Responsible for maintaining and developing a portfolio of current and potential trust and foundation donors in order to maximise sustainable unrestricted and restricted income, with particular focus on new business and on trusts giving up to, but not limited to, £250k annually
  • Develop, prepare and submit funding applications to trusts and foundations, and contribute to the delivery of the Fundraising team’s target to raise both unrestricted and restricted funds, with a particular focus on priority funding needs
  • Working with Trusts team members, the Research Analyst and Major Gifts Assistant to undertake research into prospective trust and foundation supporters, using a range of research tools and devising appropriate tailored approaches, including through peer-to-peer contacts, and IRC and external events
  • Maintain a good knowledge and understanding of the IRC’s international programmes to ensure the development and delivery of high quality concept notes and applications
  • Produce donor development plans and bespoke communications
  • Ensure all trust and foundation business development and relationship management activity, including new gifts and opportunities, is captured accurately on Salesforce, and support timely and accurate internal reporting on the team’s activity

b)     Donor Stewardship & Grants Management (25%)

  • Ensure that the Trusts team is able to develop its existing supporter relationships to maximise revenue and other strategic objectives through outstanding donor stewardship, including at senior stakeholder level.
  • Support partners and country offices in the delivery of successful field visits and other donor engagement activities as required
  • Ensure the highest standards in grants management, working with colleagues in International Programmes, Technical Units and Finance to develop high quality narrative and financial reports in line with IRC processes, including through the IRC’s grants management system OTIS

c)     Strategic Support (15%)

  • Liaise with global fundraising and International Programmes staff to develop timely, accurate and compelling information about the IRC’s work and impact
  • Monitor developments and trends in trust fundraising, including through relevant sector events and networks
  • Contribute to overall strategic and financial planning as required
  • Actively participate in Fundraising team meetings and events
  • Carry out other duties, as required, to maximise IRC-UK’s trust and foundation fundraising

 

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Essential

Skills, Knowledge and Qualifications

  • Excellent knowledge and understanding of the key principles and methods of fundraising from trusts and foundations
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage and inspire a diverse range of audiences through proposals, presentations and other tools
  • Ability to establish and build relationships with people at all levels and from a variety of backgrounds, both externally and within the IRC
  • Strong research skills; able to quickly understand and summarize complex information and align donor interest with the IRC’s strategic priorities
  • Ability to understand and demonstrate a commitment to The IRC Way: Standards for Professional Conduct and to ensure all activities are consistent with this.
  • An interest in and understanding of the IRC’s work.

Experience

  • Demonstrable experience of trusts and foundations fundraising, or equivalent experience in a similar fundraising or business development role, ideally within the context of the international humanitarian or development sector
  • Experience of using a range of approaches and tools to successfully manage donors and other key stakeholders
  • Experience of writing persuasive and creative proposals and correspondence for a wide range of audiences
  • Experience of devising, implementing and monitoring short- and long-term plans and strategies, taking remedial action where necessary.

Desirable

  •  Confident user of Salesforce, Raiser’s Edge or other CRM packages
  •  Experience of grants management within a large, complex organization.
